Counter ClockwiseYou can tell from the subtitle “My Year of Hypnosis, Hormones, Dark Chocolate, and Other Adventures in the World of Anti-Aging” that this will be a first-person and fun account with lots of heart, as can be expected by this local author. What I did not expect, though, was the great length to which Kessler investigates and reports on the scientific, biochemical aspects of both the aging process and many anti-aging efforts such as exercise, calorie restriction and other diet regimens, body modification through electronics and surgery, medical test markers, telomere augmentation efforts, etc. In fact, Kessler casually mentions her shelf of ten-linear feet of research books she read for this book.

I think a reader would feel pretty educated on current options one has to actually make one’s body younger (longer telomeres, more muscle, etc.) and help one feel and think younger. I could immediately use the list of the top ten ‘superfoods’ (a non-scientific term that indicates more healthy-stuff-per-ounce…and through her research Kessler says there is amazing agreement about just which foods qualify)–I believe she listed at least 19 of them and they are the object of my shopping this week.
