The Absent One by Jussi Adler-Olsen

The Absent OneThis is the second installment in the “Department Q” series by Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen. Detective Carl Morck, his mysterious custodian turned “assistant detective” Assad, and new team member Rose investigate the 20 year old murder of siblings, against the wishes of those higher up in the police department. A group of rich prep school buddies were implicated in the murders at the time, but the power and influence of their families protected the gang. A lot of the story is told by Kimmie, the only female in the gang. She is mentally unstable and lives on the streets of Copenhagen, hiding out from the other members of the group. Morck’s team slowly pieces the story together, adding more murders and assaults to the list of acts committed by the rich kids. This is an entertaining book and I enjoyed the interactions of the police team, but be warned that it is very violent.

Available in print and audio CD at the library.
