An Exaltation of Larks by James Lipton

an exaltation of larksThis is a sweet and lovely book that I first read when it was initially published in 1968. The latest edition comes with many revisions and updates.  It is now even more sweet and lovely.

In his book, Mr. Lipton researches and adds to the ancient art of naming groups of furred and feathered creatures.  Terms of the venery date back to the 16th century and are found in the Boke of St. Albans and other period texts.  Lipton explores these and adds more modern names.

Terms of the venery are descriptive and read like poetry. If you like the sound of: A Murder of Crows, or a Skulk of Foxes, then read An Exaltation of Larks.  You will be glad you did.
