Plain LanguageAs the story begins, Virginia Mendenhall is traveling to marry Alfred Bowen, a man she has only met twice. Their courtship has been conducted by letter, and they are starting their married life on a ranch in Eastern Colorado during the Dust Bowl. Together they struggle to raise crops and keep the ranch animals alive in a very harsh environment. The story comes alive with the details of everyday life during the Depression.
