My summer plan was to learn more about Greece by reading fiction set in Greece. This book was everything I could have hoped for. It creates the lives of several families and the spirit of their multi-ethnic neighborhood. It follows Dimitri and Katerina from childhood through romance to old age. The reader experiences the consequences of politics, dictatorships, and both world wars. The writing is plot-driven and quick to read, but provides a sense of the 20th century as experienced in Greece.
