Rules of Civility by Amor Towles

This interesting first novel by Amor Towles starts at a New York art gallery in the 1960’s where a woman recognizes a man in two of the photographs on display.  The same gentleman is shown in two different photos, one where he looks quite well to do and the other where he is obviously quite down on his luck.  The story then flashes back to the 1930’s when this woman and her friend had a chance meeting with the wealthy man in the photo.  The story then details how these two working class girls end up socializing with the high society people whom the man in the photo spent his time with.  The author gives beautiful detailed descriptions of the clothes, cars, and people that really take you back to that time.  A thoroughly enjoyable book to read!
