Mindfulness in Plain English by Henepola Gunaratana

This is an outstanding introduction to the practice of Vipassana (Insight) meditation, as taught by a Sri Lankan Theravadan Buddhist master. He first provides a clear and concise introduction to fundamental Buddhist teachings, then offers simple and gentle instructions for mindfulness meditation practice that anyone can embrace as a beginner. I always keep an extra copy on hand to give to friends who are curious about this path; I think it’s the best introduction to meditation in this tradition. It’s also well worth re-reading multiple times. A subsequent title that explores deeper states of concentration (“jhanas”) by this teacher (“Beyond Mindfulness”) is also exceptional, and might be read after a firm daily practice has been established and the meditator can consistently keep his/her attention on the breath for extended periods of time.
